NEW PROJECT : Al’ab wa bintuh (الأب و بنته)
I have the honor to present to you a new Calikesh project, “Al’ab wa bintuh” which means “Father and Daughter”.
This custom Moroccan rug project was created as a collaboration between my father and I, working together to design images which pay homage to my families amazigh heritage as well as my love for California’s Mojave desert.
The black & white rug intricately laced with Berber symbols in tribute to my grandmother, who was from the Souss region. This rug was also handmade in this region of Morocco.
The colorful rug represents the magical meeting of Joshua Tree and Morocco. Nature is always watching us, she is looking at us just like this Yucca Whipplei growing one and only flower. Yucca Whipplei are monocarpic, meaning they die after flowering.
Life is precious and beautiful.
Both rugs expressed inside a traditional Beni Ourain rug.
The rugs were handcrafted outside of Ouarzazate (a gateway of the Sahara desert) where a portion of our family lives. Calikesh is a bridge between California and Morocco using different mediums to express serenity without border.
Special thank you to my dad; Rachid Badaoui, my Aunt Souad, Uncle Fathallah and artisanal women residing in the Medina of Ouarzazate.
